For Redfield/Lyman peeps? First place to try is Brownells and if they don't have it, Victor has a wide array of uncommon sizes and will do reasonably priced customs. The other option is to make the tap yourself. It isn't that difficult and there are lots of information out there how to do it.

Big difference between 17/32"-40 in the OP and 7/32"-40, which is a peep sight thread.
Victor Tool is an excellent source for oddball taps and dies at reasonable prices. They do have 1/2"-40 and 9/16"-40, but no 17/32"-40. Can you adjust to accommodate one of these instead?

Me too. I would suspect 7/32" the more likely choice. Perhaps the OP can clear it up for us.

making their own parts, and it might be that's what worked best from a design perspective.

They have them there for $150.74 plus shipping. For a onetime use that is too steep when there are other viable alternatives.
switch to an actual reasonable standard size, and make a new barrel nut. much as I hate to say it, preferably metric, because inventing new inch threads in 32nd fractionals is absolutely fucked. "made in america" or not. join us in the 21st century
