Win 62A question...

Hi folks, I have a winchester pump gun (62A)
which shoots pretty well, it's a lot of fun.
However the feed from the magazine out into
the elevator is unreliable. I can have five
rounds in the mag tube but when I cycle the
action, a round does not chamber.

I've put a new magazine spring and follower in
it a while ago (the old ones were pretty rough)
so I don't think that's the problem.

It's an older gun, some wear. But it shoots well.

Any suggestions about where best to start looking?

Thanks - Jim

The round never makes it from the magazine
tube, into the elevator. It would take a few
cycles of the action to have a round wind up
in the elevator.

I took the action completely apart this afternoon,
it was pretty filthy. But I did find (after
drifting out the bushing that holds the elevator
to the receiver) that there is a lockout which
prevents a round from entering the elevator, if
there is already one in there.

If there is no round in there, the force of
the rim of the case on the lockout is supposed
to cause it to drop out the way. However there
was a pretty good ridge worn in that front
surface and I surmise this is what was causing
the cartridges to not feed.

I dressed the front surface of the lockout and
stoned it very smooth.

Upon reassembly it seems to feed quite positively.

Next weekend at the range will tell.

Their web site says the elevator's available,
but a call to them indicates otherwise.

"Call back in a few weeks..."

:(

Anybody got a spare NOS elevator and feed
lockout for a Win 62A?

I'm hunting parts for the same model. The only difference in problems is this one won't elevate the incoming shell at all.Numrich arms doesn't seem to have much for these old warriors nor does anyone else.Got the same response from them as Jim.

Hmm. In my example the elevator would lift
when the action was cycled, but it would not
pick up a shell from the magazine.

This was from a groove worn on the front of the
'cartridge stop' which is basically a tiny
lever that prevents another shell from feeding
once there is one in the elevator already.

The mechanism is a bit of jewelery, very tiny
pins and springs. I finally got the courage
to dismantle the entire action so I could
dress the groove out, and the poor thing was
absolutely filthy.

What are the exact symptoms in your gun?

I have one with the same problem. I studied it for about 3 hours with a small flashlight and i saw some of the parts are wore out. There was a button on the flat rod that was wore so i was going to turn another button on the lathe and weld it to the flat rod. It has been so long since i looked at it i forgot what the parts are called so forgive me...Bob

Originally on this one I have, the action bar was broken. It's not my gun, just one that it was decided I should repair.I have no idea how well the gun worked before someone attempted to weld the action bar.Of course the action couldn't be cycled when I got it.It too was nasty inside and I did a complete take down and cleaning.I very carefully tigged the action bar back together since I couldn't find one locally or on the web.And yes I tried Numrich Arms and all the others. The problem with it now is when you cycle the action everything works as it's supposed to with the exception of the lift plate. It won't lift the next shell up to be chambered.Since I had no drawing or original measurements to go by,on the action bar,I'm wondering if I got it to long or to short.
