I will direct this question to Butch Lambert due to his posting of this proceedure.

If melonite say 12L14 or stressproof it ends up with a hard surface.
If melonite say 01, or tool steel hardend, it ends up with a hard surface
Is the tool steel still a harder or more durable finish than the softer steel?

This would be on a project such as a swaging die.

Thanks four answer

Larry,
I normally use 416R barrel steel to make dies as I have a lot of it. I am not qualified to say one steel wil have a harder case than the other. I would visit with either Joel Kendrick or Randy Lanier at Mimitrutec in Arkansas. PM your email and I'll give you their contact.
It is wonderful on dies as the process does not alter the dimensions and it gives a very smooth finish to the brass.

Butch,

Will yo email me that contact info I just made a die and would like to try it. Is it economical to do one at a time? I don't make them very often.
