Default dimensions for AR-15 flat top upper reciever

I was playing around with some extra material in the shop and thought I would make a floating handguard for a AR-15. However I wanted to make it so you could install a Picatinny rail on top and have this line up with the ones on the flat top upper receivers that are so popular. As I dont own one myself I would like to know what is the distance from the centerline of the barrel to the top of the Picatinny rail and is this a standard or are all manufacturers different?
