All,

I have a friend in the U.K. who is settling a estate which contains some American Civil War material- original letters from soldiers to home and the like.

Outside of simply putting up for sale what are the well established collections of source material that these could be added to?
I am advising that public collections offer access to historians, writers etc.
I also think that adding digital copies to existing collections would be a good first step.

Any ideals of which institutions to contact?

Thanks all

Any of the civil war museums,
you will probably find that they don't have great monetary value
in most cases unless it's some one famous.

while not supper rare they do have historical value.

I would start with places like Gettysburg.

oddly the national parks service might be of help they
maintain the historical battlefield parks and have historians on staff

national museum of American history

The Army War College in Carlisle PA would love them for their archives.......students from all over the world study there.

It will be put in that persons file with reference to his unit.
