Would the best way to repair that be to make some prick punch marks on the dovetail piece of the sight and press back in?

Yes, if it is the dovetail type front sight, then the method you describe would be functional and work fine. Make the punch marks on the flat underside of the dovetail, not the bevels. I would add a half drop of Loctite during the assembly stages to make sure it doesn't happen again.
