Vintage Monarch Model "A" Lathe year id help & locating friction gear for the apron

does any 1 know about what year my Monarch is? I purchased it about 2 months ago for $1000, it came with 9" independent 4 jaw chuck, 6" self aligning 3 jaw chuck, single bolt tailstock, steady rest, follow rest, milling attachment, a lot of pulleys to change speeds right off the motor, a 1hp repulsion induction 1725 rpm 110/220V motor, all but 1 change gears for threading & look like theyve never been used, a few of the original 1 piece cutting tools that have (I think) factory #s on them plus a L,R, & S 5/16" bit tool holders boring bar + holder & cutoff holder, a lot of tailstock tools, & after purchased I bought a 10" self aligning 3 jaw chuck. the ways have a few dings close to the chuck but otherwise machine is very tight. its marked A LOT64 NO 8 on the tailstock end. power feed end to end & across or both at same time. but the power feeding is down at the moment cause the gear keeps spitting teeth out at me. id like to find all replacement gears for behind the apron just to have on hand if possible. any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!! Thanks Brandon

also the cart it is on in the pictures I built jus to move it & couldn't have planned its use any better. after I got it home & unloaded I bolted the cart to the wall behind the lathe just incase I ever have to move it again its ready since I do just rent at the moment!

I don't know how old it is, wag 1905-20 or so. Post photos of the left side..gears, the add on belt drive, etc. What gear is spitting teeth? Photo please. Most lathes and for sure that one have beds that twist easily, when it is twisted it will cut a taper. on the cart you will never get it properly leveled so as to get the twist out of it. I like how you put the wheels outside the cart, this gives it a wider base. Lathes are top heavy and will roll over in a heartbeat if you are not careful.

its a monarch lathe ill take a pic of the tag it does have. I don't have the apron apart right now to take a pic of the gear but its breaking cause of wear. sum of the teeth r wore so bad their sharp on the tips & those r the 1s that have been breaking off. its called an apron friction gear. its the main drive gear for the power feeds. I found a break down & description of parts ill see if I can up load a pic on here. ill get a closer pic of the geared end when I go out to garage here in awhile. previous owner added a v-belt in place of the flatbelt that ran apron but pullys r still on machine. no quick change gearbox on it either. 4 step flat pulleys that run the head stock APRON.jpg998101_10151693267658997_670114545_n.jpg

If you go to the main page of the forums where all the subgroups are listed you will see that in the subgroup you listed your post there is a name Milacron under the title of the subgroup. He is the moderator of this subgroup. If you click on his name it will go to a page that shows his status. In the top left of that page there are a bunch of hot links. One say send a PM. Click on that and it brings you to a Private message page where you can send him a message. Just describe your post by title and location and ask him to move it to the antique forum. That forum you can see is also listed on the main forum page above the subsection you posted in. It might take a day however he can move your post and then you continue on however you will most likely get more people reading your post and offering assistance since you will now be in the antique section which your Monarch is.
Best of luck
Harold

I have the exact same lathe. My lathe number is A Lot 72 NO. 6. Very hard to find parts. My power cross feed gear has a bunch of teeth missing so I searched around and couldn't find one. So I just removed it. I had 4 teeth missing on the friction gear too but I welded up the teeth with a mig welder and very carefully ground the teeth to shape. You could bring the gear to a machine shop and have them braze and recut the teeth. I was lucky enough to buy a small Rotex horizontal mill that came with a bunch of cutters one being the correct involute gear cutter for the size teeth on the friction gears and on the cross feed. So I plan on brazing the cross feed gear and cutting the teeth by eye since I don't have an indexing chuck to properly space the gear teeth. I will try to get a picture of my lathe. Good luck on yours.
