hydraulic surface grinder, add spin on filter? (DoAll G-1)

Hi, all, I'm refubing a DoAll G-1 from '46, a machine that had been used little and cleaned... never.

It had an unbelievable amount of crud of all kinds, including gelled hydraulic fluid that had turned to taffy inside the valves, some water, and half a lemon (no kidding). I'll post some pics.

I have done a LOT of cleaning, and after at least 6 gallons of ultrasonic solution, 10 rolls of papertowls, and 16 toothbrushes I'm almost at the "turnaround", and will start reassembly soon.

what I am wondering at the moment is, what micron rating would be suitable for the spin-on filter I'm thinking of adding between the tank take-up and the pump?

any reason not to add one?

the only filter on it was a 60-80 mesh on the uptake in the tank. I know gravity sedimentation was the real method of "purification" originally, but I can't see why this isn't a good idea unless it overloads the motor, but it is 3/4 horse..

Smart to do a complete clean up. You might want to run it say 100 hours and then change the oil again as you won't get all the crud. I would add a strainer in the tank as it gets the bigger crud before going into the pump and eventually thru the filter. Please update us as you work on it. Thanks :-)

Thank you Richard, yes I wil clean up the mesh and re-install it in the tank as a pre-filter. I will keep posting updates.

This is a real labor of love to bring this sweet baby back from certain doom and a date with the Chinese foundry that would have it coming back as a harbor freight bandsaw, vise etc.

That is also about as bad as the ways get, so I think adding some flaking for the oil without a full rescrape is the way I’m going to go.

P.S. I don’t own any scraping tools, looking for a decent hand scraper for this job, what’s your recommendation?

A few more, the last one is the worst spot, on the left front lower way on the base of the unit;

First two are under the table, I got lucky there for sure!

Well maybe I lied, this is a shot I took of the left front top of the cross-slide;

I guess that is right at the hairy edge of “just reflake for oil pockets” and “yup, gotta do a rescrape”?

We call them a strainer because they are not filters. Many machines over here have them plus filters. That's a factory install. And I hate to disappoint you Kid...the ways look like they have been re-scraped once before. With a power scraper. The little scratches and chatter marks on the edge were done with a power scraper. Not many Do-All's were power scraped from the factory. You could scrape them for oil pockets and it will make it 100% better then it is now. Where in NY are you? There are forum members who live in NY, but it's a big state. Rich

I’m in Brooklyn, and I can guarantee this thing was never touched since it left the factory, it’s just inconceivable if you saw where it came out of, that first picture with the chicken wire cage behind it is where it lived until I moved it the 3 blocks to my place a year ago.

There were literally food remnants, periodicals, and jobs put down in mid stride from 1960 when this place changed hands, and the line shaft from the ‘20s still overhead!

Yes, strainer, I stand corrected, and I guess that previous owner could have gotten the unit used from a busy operation that rescraped it, but it does have the original “gaurantee” sticker on it, and I doubt that would have survived such an environment.
