Removing old zerk fittings on a Tos FA2V

Hi, recently I got my first milling machine, an old Tos FA2V from the Czech
republic 1948.

I've started to tear it down for inspection and basic maintenance. See so that
the ways get oil, nothing is glogged up too bad etc. So far I'm quite
satisfied. Everything critical seems to work and I've gone through the main
body casting (internals), electrics and gearbox all the way to the spindle.

Now I'm dissasembling the table and the knee. As susepected, the oil lines
for the knee seems to be greased up quite bad. Also the "zerk"? fittings are
really old and wierd. They're spherical to their shape and doesn't seem to be
screwed in, potentially pushed into the cast iron?
I would like to remove the old ones if possible and replace them with something fresh, which would also
allow me to clean out the holes going to the ways for the knee a little easier.

Any input on these fittings, someone come across something similar before?

Those zerks could be pushed in or screwed in . Unscrewing them will tell at some risk of damaging the head. I would leave them as they are - I would just make sure the ball is free and I would pump grease until it's coming out clean on the other side. The problem with "cleaning" is that either you do it perfectly or you just manage to dislodge rubbish better left stuck inside.

I think you meant " pump oil " not grease Alex.

Regards Tyrone.

Hope so, I wont be pumping any grease into the ways =).

Any tips for testing the "screwability" without potentially damaging them?
