Repair bushings for Rivett 608 carriage

Hello all,

I am working on refurbishing a 1922 Rivett 608 lathe. I have gone through the head stock and cleaned, polished and repaired as necessary. I am now working in the carriage. Many of the gears for the power feed have worn bores. I would like to bore and sleeve then match the sleeve ID to to the shaft OD. I am trying to figure the best sleeve material. the gears are all unhardened steel as well as the shafts. There are a few places that the gear is integral to the shaft and runs in the cast iron carriage apron. I have a good amount of 12L14 steel and I also have 544- phosphor bronze, upon recommendations I can get a different material. Everything is relatively low speed and will be lubricated well.

Thank you for your help,
Jason

Pete,

Do you remember what alloy bronze you used? I have 544, which machines nicely but is not as hard as different alloys such as 932.

I did build the cabinet. When I purchased the lathe it did not have a cabinet, the previous owner sold the original oak cabinet with overhead drive separately, before I had a chance to buy the complete unit. It is not a replica of an original one, rather a purpose built for my needs, with a few modern upgrades, such as full extension ball bearing drawer slides with soft close. The wood is green ash and it is finished with waterborne polyurethane. I can post more pictures if you are interested.

Thank you,
Jason

Suggestion - delete the word BRASS in relation to machine tool bearings - it simply is not a bearing material in that application

C932 or C936 would be my choice - its bearing bronze
