Price is really high for this machine. especially since it is not a variable speed head I am in the market so I am up on pricing. If it came with tooling and a nice vice 1k would be right plus the table has been mauled. The paint looks nice but it does not change the machine.

iammachine,
Are you saying a bridgeport that has been reconditioned / rescraped by an experienced machine rebuilder is only worth $1000?
I've seen many clapped out / completly shot bridgeports go for $1000 - $1500.
I don't think $2900 is bad at all for this machine, even with the pulley head. The table isn't "mauled" either. I see a cutter mark, but otherwise the table has even been resurfaced. If you mount a vise on the table, that cutter mark isn't going to affect anything you do. In fact, it wouldn't affect most operations where you clamp the part directly to the table.
Unfortunately, no one wants to pay shipping on this machine. It's been advertised for awhile on here, and the sticking point is always the shipping costs. Otherwise, the machine and price have always received favorable comments.
As for your dream of owning a VS head, you need to be very careful if you're buying an older used BP with the VS head. A lot of these had problems. It seems BP had a lot of VS head issues compared to other brands such as Kondia, or Lagun.
I have a 1991 Clausing / Kondia with a VS head. It's held up well with only good care and general maintenance.

iammachine,
Please keep us posted when you find your dream machine. I would be very interested in what you get at what price. I keep dreaming of buying a nice mill some day as well and I can tell you that I would not hesitate at all buying one of John's machines. Very fair price. Good luck!

Hmmm . . . I hadn't encountered anyone I'd consider a 'troll' on PM up to now.
I'm reconsidering.

Well...
With only four posts, I doubt Sonny's seen the regular results of John's work, or read the critical comments of those who've bought machines he's been through.
Why?
Because John's opening his business reputation to a guarantee of truth-in-advertising. John has publically advertised his observations, and I have no doubt that if I were to fly out and DI that machine, that I'd see the backlash noted, and not one thou more... and likely, it'd be less.
Sonny- Based on your comment, you've apparently not been successful at evaluating these machines, nor have you looked into the cost of appropriate tooling and rebuild resources. I assure you that for what you've quoted, you'll NEVER get a true- and quiet-running spindle, much less a scratchless table with any SUGGESTION (much less guarantee) of positioning accuracy, repeatability, or precision. Variable speed is irrelevant now- Variable Frequency Drives that happily make a step-pulley machine dance with big dogs.
It's one thing to place an offer, but it's another thing to post it in a critical insult, particularly before quite a few guys who've had excellent dealings with him in the past. It's an easy task to earn disrespect of John, and the rest of the PM community by doing so.

Its funny the journeys we take with machining. I have had a couple of step pulley machines and a variable speed Cinci Toolmaster. I would rather have this step pulley machine myself than the variable speed type. They say we live our lives in circles. I believe it!

Thats a beautiful Bridgeport John, good luck selling it.

You're right. Paint doesn't change the machine.
John changes the machine.
That's why he actually doesn't spend a lot of time on the paint. He spends it where it counts.
I haven't had John do any work for me, but I've seen what he has done, heard the comments of those that have had work done and have spoken with him on the phone. Having him rework my Pratt & Whitney mill is on my wish list.

John,
That is some beautiful work you do. I would rather have one of your machines than a new one of another make. The one that is (priced wrong
), would bring about $5000 around here in the rust belt, or possibly more.
Your prices are better than E-bay, and most of those mills just have a mopped on paint job without any mechanical work.
With the many different shipping options now, maybe some of us only a few states away can get more of your QUALITY machines.
A machine repairman asked me the other day about getting a Bridgeport "table only" scraped in and I give him your contact information.
