Good Morning All.

I have been researching small new and used lathes and have landed on searching for a Clausing 4900 series lathe.

I have used my friend's Clausing vertical and horizontal mills for years and have been impressed with the build quality. The 4900 is a 10" which will fit well in my shop but will consider other models as I earn more about them.

If you have a Clausing lathe that you would consider selling let me know. I am in Maine so all of New England is easily within my travel and will consider going as far as Penn and NY.

Drop a note to me if you want to talk.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Todd

I may be looking to sell a15" gear head 8043 Clausing Lathe. I'm in the process of moving and thinking of selling it. Purchased new in 2013 with all the accessories and it has about 10 hours on it. I am located in northwestern PA.

Regards
Robert

I have a Clausing 5914 for sale in southwestern Connecticut for $2,500. It's only slightly larger than a 4900. It has an L-00 spindle instead of the 4900's threaded spindle. The price is about what most people ask for the lathe without all the tooling.

It comes with more tooling and accessories than you will ever need in a hobby machinists lifetime.

You will need to move it about five feet, turn it left, move it about 15 feet, turn it right and go up nine (concrete) steps out a bilco door. The street is a straight shot 30 feet away.

I'm selling my dad's machine shop, so if there's anything else you need, bring a bigger truck and we can make you a package deal.

I will post more pictures later today.

Here's the sales pitch:

Clausing 5914 lathe

Although just one basic machine was made, it could be ordered in a number of different specifications, the differences being mainly concerned with bed length and spindle-drive arrangements.

According to:
http://www.lathes.co.uk/clausing/page13.html
the 5914 is:
C/B = equipped with a clutch and brake assembly on the spindle drive
VS = variable-speed
Model Drive Between Centres Countershaft Motor
5914 VS 36" C/B 2 hp/3ph
The specs say 3-phase, but there is no phase converter on it, like on dad’s Clausing mill, so it must be single phase. Not sure if 110 or 220.
Based on the serial number, it is 1966 OR 1967.
Here are some specs I found on the internet::
Specification Description
Swing Over Bed 12"
Swing Over Cross Slide 7"
Distance Center to Center 36"
Spindle Speeds Back Geared (18) 52 - 280 RPM
Spindle Speeds Belted (18) 360 - 2000 RPM
Feeds Longitudinal (54) 00076" - .0367" / Rev.
Threads English (54) 4 - 192 TPI
Spindle Hole Diameter 1-7/16"
Motor AC and Controls
Approximate Overall Dimensions 72" L-R x 32" F-B x 52" H
Approximate Weight 2000 lbs
Flame hardened bed
The actual thread chart on the machine shows threads up to 224 and feeds as small as 0.00065.
I have seen other references to the weight being closer to 1,500 lbs.
The spindle nose is L-00. You can get backplates and other tooling from several suppliers and on ebay.
The hydraulic speed controls on these lathes have had problems, but my dad rebuilt the whole drive about 10 or so years ago, which included many new parts from Clausing.

The bed on these lathes is an almost solid chunk of cast iron. There are four oval holes in the bed that route the swarf diagonally out to the rear rather than the typical construction of sides with bracing in between.

Cross-feed dial has 1/2 turn of backlash, compound is about 1/3 turn. Dials are direct reading (i.e. 10 thou on the dial means 10 thou off the part, not 20 – the dials read diameter, not radius).

Variable speed from 360-2000 in direct drive and 52-280 in back gear.

Includes pretty much everything you need to hit the ground running:
Original Clausing taper attachment.
6" adjust-tru type 6-jaw chuck with L-00 backplate. Believe it to be a Bison.
8" or so 4-jaw chuck with L-00 backplate.
5" or so 4-jaw centering chuck with a spigot on the back so that it was held in the 6-jaw or 4-jaw. This chuck is great for rapidly chucking up square stock.
Chuck keys.
What looks like a complete set of 5C collets by 64ths, look to be Hardinge and other quality brands.
5C collet adapter for spindle (there might be two of them).
Older BXA piston toolpost, not sure if Aloris.
18 BXA toolholders all with carbide or other tools / toolholders in them, including rack to hold them.
BXA boring bar holder.
BXA drill chuck holder.
Multi-position tailstock turret.
7 storage boxes full of hundreds of carbide inserts, most of them brand names like Kennametal, Teledyne, Iscar, VR/Wesson
A drawer full of other carbide insert toolholders.
A set of lathe mandrels.
A light mounted to the carriage.
Threading dial
Multi-position carriage stop that ratchets when you pull the lever.
Various tailstock tools, including live centers, bull center and other.
Lantern toolpost.
Original Clausing lever collet closer (think it was made by Royal).
Includes an original hardcopy manual.
Electronic copy of the manual is available at:

And here's 7 boxes of inserts, just in case you were worried about keeping all those toolholders tipped up.

We sold the lathe and the buyer picked it up last weekend.

He moved it by dismantling it down to the bare bed and took it out the bilco door.

Hopefully the re-assembly goes as smooth.
