Greetings vintage iron experts:

There is a good sized Monarch lathe for sale on Craigslist in SoCal. Maybe model 60 or 61 ??? Ad says it's a tracer lathe, but also says it does threading. Seller said on phone call that it indeed does threading, and has cross and longitudinal feeds. But confirms that compound does not swivel. Is there such an animal as a tracer lathe that also does everything else? Any other features or problems that would make this machine either desirable or something to stay away from. So far, asking price would keep me away, but who knows. Also, it could be a low speed machine.

Here is link to CL ad:

MONARCH LATHE 20X725 WITH TRACER

Thanks for any info, Dale

Second what Thermite said. The add on tracer machines are just normal machines with a tracer retrofitted. They can do pretty much everything a normal machine does. I know I have one and it's amazingly convenient. Collet closers, all the different chucks, stops, rests all the extras. Just with a self contained hydraulic tracer grafted on the back. Not common and usually only on production machines but not rare either.
