Just saw this here. Would be interesting to see how much anyone gets paid if it does get moved to the US? I wonder how anyone would survive in Ontario on $16.50hr, pretty sure that's well into poverty line, min wage is 10.25 and it gets you a cardboard box to live in these days in most canadian cities.

Now why is it exactly that anyone should want to enter the trades? you could be licking stamps for more than $16.50hr!

Local GE plant caught mexican fever and headed over the boarder a few years ago. When they left wages where about $16 an hour.

Laid off employees received retraining courtesy of uncle sam at the community college. The plant moved back about 2 years later. Started rehiring the workers who now also had an associates. about $10 and significantly lower benefits.

On edit, anyone care to hazard a guess why the housing market wont improve?

I guess it depends what these workers getting $33 an hour are doing. Are they floor sweepers? Are they CNC programmers? Are they button pushers?

No reason a guy doing a job that requires a fourth grade education should be making $33 an hour.

Ive never understood why people get pissed if someone is making a decent wage for doing a relatively low skill job? I say good, glad they're making some money. Why would I wish for them to make less?

I thought conservatives are all into free markets? If a janitor can get 50 bucks an hour than that's what he can get. If I can't get that for being a machinist, it's not his fault. I could probably go get a job at Boeing with the machinist union and make more money but I choose not to.

What would you be willing to pay a guy to sweep the floor in your shop?

Very nice.

Well its a 30 min job, so $33 an hour for 40 hours a week plus bennies seems fair...

I dont know,, maybe $5K an hour should cover it.

And I really doubt the floor sweeper was making $33 an hour. More likely if that is a number thrown out for an average (and the article did not say WHO was making it). And to get the average cat figured the cost of everyone in the place. Including all taxes, benefits, relocation expenses of execs, toilet paper, bandades, engineering staff, drug testing, etc and then divided by employment numbers.

Hondajet did this locally. Advertised $60K a year then offered a "very competitive" $9-10 an hour. Competitive with whom? Sheetz gas station?

Cat is likely negotiating right now for a truckload of taxpayer $millions from some locality in exchange for relocating this operation. That's what they've become famous for over the last several years, and its surprisingly coincidental how a particular plant seems to cost too much to operate just about the same time as when all the subsidies run out.

Just one more in the growing group of industrial shitbag welfare recipients who can't seem to ever be satisfied unless they're pushing wages down and then sucking up a portion of what those lower paid employees spend on property taxes, in the form of subsidies, or more accurately, bribes.

Cat owns Progress Rail. Progress Rail owns EMD. Cat likely wants to move production back to the U.S. so as to be able to meet U.S. content requirements for Amtrak and commuter roads. Right now Alstom and Siemens are building passenger locos in the U.S. for this market. Wouldn't want them to get too established and start building freight engines here. Cat is already building freight locos at Muncie IN.
I don't think $16.50 will go far in that market.
P.S. I note from the Progress Rail website that they are starting welders and wheel machinists at $14.04, Production mechanics at 13.22 and forklift drivers at 10.72. NFW you can live on that up there.

Love how these boners bitch about a janitor making 30k a year and then turn around have no problem at all with a hedge fund manager making billions a year. Or some fuck face CEO that outsources everything and drives the company into the ground, all while making millions.

You would be totally cool with it if you were in the worker's (in the news story) shoes? Company is doing as well as ever, if not better, but "Take a 50% wage and benefit cut, just because!"
At least we don't have the "Asshole disease" of..."F*CK EM! It ain't ME!!!!!" HAHAHAHAH!!! I hate them and hope the worst happens to them!!!!!HAHAHAHAH!!!!" You anti-union guys are great human beings! Incapable of having any concern for anyone but yourself.
