Here in Toronto, from what I see, for the most part, the average Chinese immigrant to here isn't that much better off then the ones in previous decades. But then again, most Chinese do not work in and around China Town. With a current population of nearly 300,000 Chinese just in Toronto alone, and 500,000 in the GTA. There isn't anywhere near enough jobs in China Town for them.

Most of that boom was from Hong Kongnese moving to Canada before the change over from British to Mainland Chinese control. It's still happening, but according to local Chinese news papers most of it is from Taiwanese.

I definitely saw the change in one part of town here the last 14yrs... but then I'm not in Ontario. I landed in Toronto around 2004, I since call it " Canada's middle east ".
Oh and that "boom" is happening right now, perhaps not so much in ontario, but BC and some parts of the maritimes, yep. Then again lots of people from Ontario are moving down here as well.
"Chinese news" I wonder if its like all the other news in China...

It must be different in eastern Canada- I live near Vancouver, go there a lot, and Vancouver has over 400,000 chinese-canadians there, about 20% of the entire population. The vast majority are from mainland china, and most are wealthy and educated.
According to a recent study, 25% of recent chinese immigrants to Vancouver have PHD's.
Since you can essentially "buy" Canadian citizenship with an investment of $800,000 CDN, many wealthy chinese are getting Canadian residency- this article says 70% of the recent immigrants to BC have used this class of visa- thats a LOT of millionaires.
Chinese immigrants: Why they come, why one-third return | Vancouver Sun
I certainly see a lot of very wealthy chinese in Vancouver, driving big, expensive cars, shopping for luxury goods, and living in very expensive neighborhoods. I think a lot of chinese are buying houses in Vancouver just so their kids can go to college there, even if they return to China after graduation.

It's similar at the other end of Canada, except its not quite as pricey on our end for houses compared to BC and less make it this far east. So I guess that makes Ontario the exception eh. I like the asians personally, all those I've met the last few years have it be korean, chinese, japanese, were very polite, generally quite well educated and did learn to speak english(many come here for that, though not all get to stay), or french eventually for those going there. Can't say the same about a few other ethnicity who are hell bent on bringing with them all the baggage that makes their home countries shit.
At the same time we have people here leaving to go work in China and other countries.

I'm talking locally printed stuff. Most of it has a strong anti-CPC stance. The mainland Chinese news you can get around here doesn't seem to talk about Canada too much, except as to how great Harper is.

Chinahand,
Sorry for my misunderstanding, STORAGE. That is one nice thing about my Lenovo Tablet K1, 32 G (gig), and expansion of 32 gig, Micro SD. It may not BE an Ipad, I wouldn't know, but they are not upgradeable. Also, it only cost 280 USD, and the Ipad starts at 500 US for the 16 gig.

Watched the opening ceremony, don't know if the 'uniform' are the alleged uniforms for U.S. team, seemed fitting on everyone.
I remember that I had read the newspaper might be 20 years ago, by the time China had no any automatic pressing machines yet so that the suits were not as smart as it should be, at that time, China lacked for hard currencies, all investments were mainly on manufacturing equipments and power plants etc...
About 10 years ago, Chinese media disclosed that foreign brands were purchasing Chinese made suits and just change the labels, at mean time making 10 times of profits off them. Now their simply outsourcing it.
Why not ?
Cheers.

Re the opening ceremony of the Olympics. I gave up after the Danish team entered as a female (Danish and of course commenting in Danish) journalist kept up an incessant and factually wrong commentary on the whole thing. Twice I had to stop watching and go outside to stop myself from throwing a brick through the TV. God wasn't listening to me as she didn't drop down dead or get struck by lightning

Sad - but true.
Now consider this: if they are made in the US they would would employ a few people. OK - but they would still be made on foreign machines. Mostly Japan and Taiwan. All these garment manufacturers showing up on the evening news think nothing of buying all the machines from Japan. If they would buy in the US - they could help the American manufacturers of Industrial Sewing Machines. But guess what - they think it's cheaper to buy overseas. Now Gentlemen of the US garment industry - just WHAT are you thinking and why are the stupid TV reporters not going one step further? Remember - even if the Uniforms are made in the US, they will still be made on foreign machines.
CONSEW is American I believe.

currently anyway, the flow is in the other direction- Mexicans are LEAVING the USA. There is no work.
Mexican immigration to the USA stopped in 2012, and has begun to reverse.

And Mexicans have no great love for China, either- there is a huge backlash in Mexico against "Hecho in Chine" products, as they are replacing Hecho in Mexico, and taking away Mexican jobs.

I think you're posting that just as an excuse to show the photo

Is there any country in the world where the population likes people taking away jobs from their own country?
In the Olympics countries are competing against each other but it's being done by people competing against other people just as companies compete against each other even when both from the same country.
I believe it's called "competition"

Chinahand,
I lke your command of the English language. I even like your last pictures posted, I don't know who the women were, but, the men in blue and white looked like bums, with untailored trousers.
Looks like they gave then ALL 40" inseam pants, just go out and pose for the picture! They could not take 5 minutes per and hem to length?

Yes George, very ture. Looks like everyone didn't choose the right size for themselves, maybe they didn't even try it but had to wear it on certain occasions.
I like what your writing.

Or maybe, U.S. teams like dressing like this? Never mind.

A little bit off the topic. As I remember since I was a child, the olympic game was about to compete which country wins the most Gold medals, however, now its changed to see which country can win the most medals.
When and who changed the rules?
