The August 2011 Employment Situation Summary report showed manufacturing employment remained steady in August, following a gain of 36,000 in July. Over the previous 4 months, the manufacturing sector has added an average of 14,000 jobs per month, compared with an average of 35,000 jobs per month in the first 4 months of the year.

As a whole the unemployment rate held at 9.1%, with the number of unemployed individuals at about 14.0 million.
