The January 2011 Employment Situation Summary report showed employment in the manufacturing and retail trades on the rise. Employment in the construction and transportation and warehousing sectors was down.

As a whole the unemployment rate fell by 0.4% for the second consecutive month, and the number of unemployed individuals fell to about 13.9 million.
