Thats right, in these days of record spending, even Uncle Sam is cutting back. How do I know this? Because they cut ME back. My boss informed me that our branch was about $250,000 in the hole and that my contract was being canceled. Two days notice.

Sooooooo

I am looking for work.

Instrumentation / Data Ac and Control / Hardware / Embedded programming / Networking guy with 20+ years experience. Willing to travel for a weeks contract work.

The Corps Of Engineers is who I *was* working for. Sure they are hiring, if I want to move to New Orleans. I was born and raised in the ****-hole and I am not going back. Though I hear its kinda nice now that its empty.

Trent Lott is getting $700,000,000 to move the CSX line damaged by the storms which CSX just spent $250,000,000 to rebuild... Maybe he needs help. Mississippi wants to redevelop that coastline with casinos. Somehow, putting casinos in the paths of hurricanes seems like doubling the bet, but if they do blow away, Uncle Sam will build them back for you. Charles

The Casinos, you can bet, are funding there own rebuilding. They have PLENTY of money AND insurance, they don't need any help. The sad fact is that the casinos have become the drug pusher for the state and the drug is tax money. The entire coast line is dependant on that cash flow, as is the state capitol. So they will do whatever in the hell they can to get those damn boats open again.

Personally I don't see why someone in Iowa needs to pay taxes to help rebuild a home that was built on the gulf coast. If you move there, you should assume the risk. If you can't afford to rebuild you're 3000 sq. ft. home, tough ****, let me show you a nice "modular" home 160 miles from the coast.

But why should a casino owner pay for rebuilding if he can get the taxpayeers to step up to the plate and pay? After all, keeping the benefits and shoving off the responsibility has become the American Way. Charles

jkilroy, was it the Corps downtown or WES on Halls Ferry Rd where you worked at?
I'm curious as I've been contemplating a return to V'burg, but soon may not be a good time if that's widespread layoffs by the gov. A LOT of people would be affected by that...too many.

Dirt, yep, I was contracting at WES, been out there for about 5 years. Between Katrina and Iraq the goverment is having a hard time printing the money fast enough (to inflate the economy fast enough) to keep up. Everything else falls by the wayside. I have heard of a couple more groups, actual goverment employees, not contractors, that are getting RIF'ed as well.

That aside, the general area is doing quite well for the time being. There is a solid building boom going on state wide. Are you from this area originally? You might be interested in the future build out at the nuke plant down river in Port Gibson. They are probably going to be starting work in 2 years.

That's interesting to know about the RIF's at WES. Ex (BridgeTroll) works there at computer center with the green roof that looks like a restaurant. I'm originally from this area, but I like it there in spite of the summers...addicted to the deer hunting there in the "golden triangle"

Grand Gulf?? LMAO. I gave it up to whittle wooden beaks and take a more fulfilling line of work. That after 19 years of nuclear. The CEO Lupberger was voted by Forbes "highest paid worst CEO". And it was reflected in management. It was always some crisis management manure from a guy who thought we were a fusion plant
and didn't know bee$h** from apple butter....

I took up Heavy equipment operation and repair and I like it a lot. Just gotta get my hip fixed so I can get back to it. Not much happening around here and I thought with the storms, there's still a lot to clear up. I appreciate it, I was wondering.....

So your Ex works at ITL? Hmmmm, Bridge Troll? Don't think I want to have a run in with her. I hear there are just waiting on the word to lay off some folks there, maybe she will get lucky!

DOD has mandated a 10% reduction at many facilities for FY2007. I'm old (64), over paid (not my opinion, Upper Managment thinks everybody is overpaid except them of course), and on top of the seniority list. Have been offerd $25K to retire and get out of the way.

The paper had a piece on downsizing the Forest Service. 2/3 of the jobs are under review.

The Forest Service, BLM, Dept of Energy and the Renewable Energy Lab have all seen big reductions in people and budgets the past several years.

News from Bushland is all about doing this or doing that but there is no money so nothing really happens.

I hate to say keep voting the way you are, but, Keep voting the way you are, you will soon all be out of your jobs.

LMAOATRAHWTTBACTTNT,

George

I can feel for those who lost their government job. But the it HAD to come to government reduction at some point.
According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics, an agency within the U.S. Department of Labor, in the year 2000 there were 130.3 million total employed in the U.S. 20.3 million were Federal government employed. Thats over 15% of the total work force. Employment by state and local governments brings the total government employment close to 40%.

HMMMM 40% of the work force paid with tax dollars, how long did you think that dog would hunt?

Al

That sounds like 40% of the workers have taxes taken out of their pay in order to pay their own wages.

You'll find that people working in the public sector don't get a break on their tax liability.

cheers,
Michael

Hi Michael, that may be true, but most of my buddies working for the USACE make $80K+ (Some over $100K) a year or more. You need all of the taxes of three or four $100K money earners to pay the salary and benefits of one engineer! Like Al said, that dog won't hunt, at least not for long.
