Try explaining it to the public at large.

We would be in deep trouble if we had to ramp up for a WW2 type war. The ACLU and lawyers in general would be making a fortune from those trying to avoid conscription.
I watched "Darkest Hour". It was great. The bit that everyone laughed at was when Churchill asked for the planes England had bought to be sent. FDR answered - 'the ones we loaned you the money for.' This time it will be us asking the Chinese.

Of course, now that you've said that someone will try to find the oldest non-archived thread, just to resurrect it.

How about week one. Dec 2000. http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/general-archive/haloooooo-95322/ I believe that to be one of the first ever posts.

I vote we save that until Dec 20, 2021, when we turn 21 years old.

Regards. Phil.

(On Edit) Found the very first post ever at Practical Machinist..http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/general-archive/test-92723/

Post #1 IS the oldest on PM. ipse dixit Don Thomas

Post #2 may be the most honest.

Post #3? "Be careful what you wish for." AKA "Brother, you ASKED for it!"

:)

This is accurate for today:

You wanna understand "desperate", you shudda "been there" - anywhere within a hundred miles of the Homestead Works, PA, WBGVA, Western Ohio - whilst it was current news.

Or even 15 - 20 years earlier as the decline of Big Steel started its down-slope run.

Not fun when the US Army induction physical rates you 4F due to malnutrition and you have to beg a Medic to put his thumb on the scale to bump a 5' 10" kid from 130 lbs to 145 just to get IN and gratefully beef back up on Army chow.

Nowadays there are entire legions of Gummint programs to reduce starve-to-death as were not even dreamt of back then.

And the applicants for Military Service? Rejected more often on GROSS obesity.

Go figure.
