Need 5 1/2 TT-550 GP box threads cut in Houston on a few pieces
Title says it. If you know of a Houston area job shop with the data, gauges and experience to cut Grant Prideco / NOV 5 1/2 TT-550 box threads for me on two test stumps, PM or call John Oder at (713) 937-3800
-
Did some googling, that is a very interesting thread.
-
John,
I just gave my contact information to a guy down here on cutting some GP threads and I left it at the office.
The place is called V & M Tube-Alloy, 14333 Sommermeyer, Houston, 713-462-7613.
They were licensed to cut these threads and as far as I know they still do.
Let me know if this doesn't work, I'll get a hold of Eddie and see if he knows who to contact at GP that can hook you up with a license shop to cut them.
Ken
Update:My brother, Eddie, said Tube-Alloy may not be able to cut these since theirtakeover by Vallourec. He will talk to GP customer service in the morning andlet me know something. Ken

V & MTube-Alloy used to be a Grant Prideco company until a few months back, maybe a year ago, I don't know for sure. They are now owned by Vallourec, same people that own Vam another widely world known premium proprietary connections used in the oil field.
These guys used to cut nearly all premium preparatory connections available to the oilfield as well as all of your common connections rather it was rotary shouldered connections, 8 or 10 RD connections, they could cut them.

NOV up in Conroe? I know they're not a job shop but they were also a Grant Prideco company and I know they're well tooled up for that kinda thing
-
Putch,
NOV/GP at Conroe is part of the old Reed-AtlasBradford group and Texas Oil Tools and a couple others. National Oilwell pretty much owns all of theleft over companies that were big back in their days.

John,
Not to interupt the purchasing process, but as an interested bystander, could
you give us an idea of how much this work cost's (don't have to reveal your
actual bid price).

Don't know - I am just the technical department assisting with the process. My fifty-five years of experience endowed me with just enough snap to know what was needed to make it happen.
Thanks to all who replied - especially my old friend Ken who I met as a bright kid of about 17 in the early to mid seventies.

An api box or pin gets reconditioned for $65 (caused me to lose all interest in doing them)
These proprietary threads are a different story
You have to reverse engineer your own data gauges and inserts.
Thread # 1 is very expensive and puts you in a bad place liability wise.

To add to the interests of this thread, This is a tapered thread with about a 1-1/2” taper per foot, where most tool joint threads are 2”-3” taper per foot. It is a “two start” or double lead thread. Where on a typical tool joint thread you have only one shoulder make-up, here you have two shoulder make-up. The thread geometry is slightly different from the typical .038R thread profile. It’s not a thread you want to cut on a manual lathe, it almost has to be cut on a CNC lathe. The licensed shops get around $350-650 per end to cut a new connection.
