I have a two story shop. We need to move a tool room lathe down to ground level. It is a Clausing Colchester 15", 100" x 36" x 48", 2600 lbs. The hole to 1st floor is 93" x 66".
My dad moved this machine upstairs without disassembly, however, none of the old timers can remember how he did it. My plan is to wheel the headstock end onto a platform, hook the tailstock end to a chainfall on beam above the hole. Lower the headstock down, until almost vertical, then lower tailstock end as clearance develops. Any thoughts on turning an engine lathe vertical? Will this damage the machine?
