We have an old M4 with a T1 controller on it that we use occasionally at work. Worked fine last week, booted it up today and as soon as the screen came on the z axis jerked back and forth and it threw up error #2 F Error Excess-Z

We tried turning it off then on again a couple of times but that didn't fix it. Has anyone had this before? Any ideas how to fix it?

First of all, let it be under power for 30 min, power of (main switch) for 10 seconds and power up, if this helps you have one or more bad capacitor someware. (Very common on these old machines.)

Do you have an resolver/encoder/sensor at the end of the ballscreew, if so check this:
Cable OK?
Cable connected OK?
Bellow coupling brooken between ballscreew and sensor?

You can also try switch sensor with X-axis to see if the error is at the sensor.

All this is based on some troubleshooting I have done on our T2/T3 machines.

Tried your suggestion and it worked. looks like we have 1 or more bad caps on a board. At least now we can get our sparky to fix it and don't have to call the dealer in. Thanks for the help.
