Maybe it's just the pictures, but the interior of the machine (particularly the chucks) almost looks like it's been blasted or something.

Sweet looking machine.

Nice, looks like a lot of... fun... , just wondering the hexagone around the back of the chucks, does the whole spindle move in and out on an hexagon ram or something, or its just a shield ?

Wish you could see what we did to an I-150 last December....heh.

SND, AFAIK, the main doesn't move. That's the tool changer door right above it.

To the OP: Don't hit the door with a tool, it's quite a chore to change it.....

ust wondering the hexagone around the back of the chucks, does the whole spindle move in and out on an hexagon ram or something, or its just a shield ?

The hexagon is just a sheet metal shield to keep chips and coolant from getting behind the chuck. Mazak has standardized on the hex shape, as it functions much better than a round shield, as chips can collect on the top-center of a round shield.

It is critical to have shielding around the rear of the chuck with live-tooled machines. Why? Because the spindle bearings are protected only by a labyrinth seal, which only works when the spindle is TURNING.

Since live-milling is done with the spindle stopped, or just rotating slowly for "feed", the chuck shield is a must to prevent coolant from getting behind the chuck and weeping into the spindle bearings.

Sweeet Integrex, btw! Mazak has always made the best "looking" cnc machines, imo.

Ugh. It has been blasted. When you buy a new machine from Japan, every square inch of the interior and exterior that has bare metal, including underneath the way covers, has been blasted with a thick/firm grease for rust prevention. It's a nightmare to remove. Plastic paint scrapers, two cases of paper towels, a few gallons of mineral spirits, and about 40-60 man hours.

This machine is 7 years old and the shit is still there!

Yup, it's some kind of grease and it's a bitch to get off. We have several that look like yours Joe, still got that stuff on em years later. They won't rust though.....

They should be coming in the 25th to do the final leveling and run outs. Have a few more options to install also. Have 213 and 1000 psi coolant, plus a couple of software upgrades. Starting 3 guys the following weeks for training.
Had to moving the install date to the right due to getting electrical plumbed in. But its coming along.

Finally have power! Shop is coming along nicely. Ill keep posting as she comes along.
