I just bought this on a whim at an auction this week. Curious as to opinions of this vintage and just what model is it? Swings roughly 34" over the bed and has 14 feet between centers. I spoke to the plant manager and a couple of the operators there who said that it worked perfectly and was very well cared for.

I was looking at some smaller equipment and the price was just too good to say no.

Thank,John

I guess I should call Mazak to find out what it weighs so that I can plan loading transportation and unloading. It looks like an easy 20,000 pounds. It looks as if Mazak is still producing a similar model according to their website.

The mass is stamped on the ID plate, in your 4th picture. I cant make it out by the quality of the pic, but it looks like 11,550 kg's. That would make it 25,563 lb.

Regards Phil.

For giggles, a new Powermaster Universal that size, with 2 steady rests and large through-hole power chuck, would set you back $300K+...possibly even more.

Fantastic machines! Pay attention to your power requirements, that beast has a 40hp spindle motor.

40HP? That's it? That thing looks like it should have 75-100 HP. One of my M4's has a 50HP motor on it. An M4 is 1/2 the size of that machine.

The nameplate appears to show 30HP continuous, and 40hp for 20 mins. Notice this machine was made in Japan, thus the difference? Or possibly different gear ratios in the headstock??

Note, these are "real" horsepower ratings, not "locked rotor" ratings seen on Haas' and some other machines.

The Japanese machine differently than we do, they are more methodical and paced, not obsessed with burying the load meters!

Greg, I would love to stop by your shop someday. I am regularly driving through Abingdon Virginia at least twice a week. The motor does show 40 horsepower. I also am the proud new owner of a 1988 Pacific 175 ton 12 foot press brake which I just purchased this weekend Augusta, Georgia thinking that it would weigh 15-18,000 lb so then I find out by calling Pacific that it weighs 26,700 lbs...

Oh really! Bring a dust pan, knee pads, a flashlight and pack a lunch.

By "M4" I was referring to my Mazak M4 built in Japan. It's a 22x60 lathe with an OD turret and a lay down style ID turret. I have two of them and the one I use frequently is 30HP DC and I do have to run it at 100% spindle load regularly in 1018. I bought a second one 20 years newer (same machine made in '98) and it has a 50/40 HP AC motor on it. I haven't put the 50 HP one into use yet, but I wouldn't be shocked if I used that much power turning 1018.
