Relatively new to forums but from what I can gather there are a lot of knowledgeable people out there who may have the answer to my question!

I have a switch-able magnetic base for a dial indicator (iv seen them with a push button too) and I'm curious as to how they actually work?? Has anyone dismantled one and had a peak inside? or have the knowledge of this type of magnets and their workings??

Thanks
Bex :)

It's quite simple. There are two ferrous plates separated by a non-ferrous (non-magnetic) spacer. In the center there is a bore running through all three plates and in the bore is a permanent magnet. When the poles of the magnet (north and south) are lined up with the non-ferrous spacer, the magnet is off. When the magnet is rotated so the poles line up with the ferrous plates, the magnetic base is on.

Thanks for the speedy response! :) that now makes sense!

I'm desperately trying to educate myself on everything dial indicator based for a project!
