Measuring flatness of a given area

Hello,

I am developing an MSE for a product with a flatness spec of .0002/IN for each side. Engineering told us that means .0002 inches per circle with radius of a half inch. We are using an inverted gauge under a granite block to measure flatness for other products. How do I guarantee we are measuring a circle with a diameter of 1 inch? Should we be using a laser or CMM to measure flatness? The product surfaces are ~5x3 incehs, oblong in shape, and various drilled holes.

Thanks.

I hope I'm not about to tell you information you already know, but the spec shouldn't just say .0002/IN. It should be more specific. If they want it checked in the way that you say they want it checked, the call-out should read like this:

| *flatness symbol* | .0001 / *diameter symbol* 1 |

Here is an example of a correct call-out:

flatness per unit.PNG

Regarding inspection, our CMM software has an option to check flatness on a per unit basis. If your software does too, I would do that. I imagine it would be very tricky to try and check that by hand.
