Is there much stress on the gears that run the lead screw ?
I found a 127 tooth master plate to index a transposition gear used in i/m threading. Would brass, aluminum, or nylon work good for this project.

Any thoughs or has anybody tryed it ?

Thanks
Dave

The gears driving the gearbox from the spindle (where you would use that 127 tooth gear) are not highly stressed. I have a lathe considerably larger than a 10 EE that uses a nylon toothed gear in the train between the spindle and gearbox to reduce gear noise. It has a cast iron hub with nylon toothed gear. It's been in use for about 30 years with no observable wear or problems but it's never been crashed either. I wouldn't hesitate to use brass or nylon for that metric transposer gear.

The entire gear train of the 10EE's box and leadscrew rides on ball bearings, even the 60/127 transposer.

Monarch usually uses steel for its gears, and most are shaved and heat treated, and some are gound and honed.

I should think brass would be satisfactory, but mild steel would be OK, too. I wouldn't use nylon or other polymers.

I would probably use 1020 for my gear blanks.

Possibly pre-hard, if I wanted to get really serious.
