I have just powered up my 16CW for the first time. Monarch said that Motor pulley and drive pulley at clutch should run clockwise (when looking directly at shaft). The chuck is running backwards . Can anyone with a "C" series check the correct rotation of the motor and drive pulley?
For the spindle to turn CCW looking at the chuck, the input shaft (and clutch pulley) have to turn the other way looking at the chuck end of that first shaft.
If you look at the clutch with the clutch cover off as in the picture below, the clutch should turn counterclockwise when the lathe is normally running forward . If the lathe is running in the reverse mode, the clutch should be turning clockwise. If your lathe is opposite of this, you need to switch any two of your 3 phase input leads to reverse the rotation of your motor.

John I am dense and it may take me awhile to make sense of it. If I understand you, I am looking at the wrong end of the pulley shaft, (at the clutch) to determine correct rotation. So reversing two phases on the motor will correct the problem making this end of the shaft turn CCW---the chuck end of the shaft will CW and the chuck will turn correctly; CCW.
This lathe does have the optional reverse lever, (that doesn't appear to do anything) Is the reverse lever supposed to control the spindle direction?
If you're referring to the apron mounted reverse lever, that is for reversing the leadscrew and feeds. Don't reverse the feeds with the spindle running, you will really hammer the reverse gears in the headstock, jog the spindle instead.

Harry, the reverse lever I'm talking about is on the headstock between the two sets of speed adjusting levers.

Thanks Doc, I was trying to re-size my photo of the Clutch end while you were posting this (don't think we need 31 inch photos ). I'll put the two 3 phase leads back where they were.

Just wanted to say thanks to all who are helping this noob get this lathe up and running. Monarch responded this morning with same recommendation. Switched the leads this morning and lathe is running in correct direction.
Now my feeds are not working; I'll start a new thread
