Hey,

Posting here since Monarch bought out Dean Smith & Grace, so it's kinda a Monarch.

I've been offered a good deal on an early DSG 17x48. It's very solid, good working condition. Has 3&4 jaw, spindle plug, etc. it's spent it's life cutting threads in a brass shop. Feels great to operate.

I am tempted as it is a lot more robust than some of the other options I've looked at but I am unsure. It has a fast lock spindle (obsolete?) and has a plain bearing headstock. This means it's limited to 720rpm which seems too slow for carbide? And I have no clue on what maintenance plain bearing headstocks need.

Would you use one for one-off general machining?

The Rolls Royce of lathes ,720 RPM is fine for anything bigger than 1" diameter ,of course you can do smaller stuff but it wouldn't be very handy.

As long as the bearings are OK now you can do a bit of research on how to look after them and the spindle nose won't be anything to worry about if you have 3 + 4 jaw chucks.
