    Default Headstock cover on 16CW

There are 3 bolts on top of the headstock cover, are they for any type of adjustment? Can I remove the cover and just replace it or is there anything more to it? Sorry for the basic question but I would rather ask before I screw something up.

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Default Headstock cover

Mike, I have two CY's and the headstocks are probably identical to yours. Neither one of my covers have anything connected underneath in this area. One of my covers does have some old threaded holes in the same general area and I assume that they were used to mount some type of accessory such as a shield or worklight. I would recommend scraping around the cover so as to minimize dirt and debris from falling into the headstock when you remove it. Both of my covers were frozen down pretty tight and took some tapping and prying to break them loose.

My 12ckk has a worklight bolted on in that location. Nothing on the inside.

    Default Headstock Cover on 16CW

    Reeltor,

My 1945 CY has no bolts in the locations where your picture shows three bolts. I second docwilson's notion that the three bolts on your headstock cover were user-installed and were probably intended for accessory attachment, most likely a chuck guard.

    docwilson, Herb W and NJ_Toolnut,

Thanks for the very fast response. I'll try to remove the cover tonight. I was concerned that the nuts were for some adjustment inside the headstock.

    Thanks again.

    Default cover weight?

I have not removed the cover yet; fighting alligators getting power correct. Saw some photos where there was a eyebolt in the cover (or a threaded hole to add an eyebolt) and thought I could just pick it up with the cheep HF shop crane. Any idea what the cover weighs?

    thanks,

    Mike

Probably 65-75 lbs. I can just get the cover up there by myself and I am old and wimpy.

The picture of the cover and eyebolt is in the "Another New Toy" thread. That is a 16" Series 60/61 cover, and it a lot heavier and more awkward than the C Series covers. I've got a 16"CY. The C Series doesn't have an eyebolt hole, unless it has been added later.

Default Interior looks good to me

Took the cover off, yes even a short, round, wimpy guy can do it
I really do want to thank everyone for their input.

Here are some photos, everything looks good to me, don't see any broken teeth etc. Tomorrow after work; I will drain the oil. I also need to check to see if the lower oil sight glass has been covered-up with something on the inside. Sight glass appears to be a thin piece of plastic.

The round thing (with the bright wear track) on the biggest gear is actually an eccentric and works the oil pump. Each time the spindle makes a rev, the upper sight glass with the end of the tube showing should deliver oil. Drip drip drip mine goes at slow speeds. Faster should be more of a stream.

This shows you the pump is functioning.

What it don't show you is if tubes going to front and rear spindle bearings are doing the same thing.

Pull the tube ends out from spindle bearing ports and work the pump. You'll soon know if oil getting there.
