I looked in the rear view mirror and there it was. A 1990 10EE. Well, since I just happened to be in Houston at the time, and Steve Watkins' place was near by, I figured I might as well drop it off there the the avanced scraping class Rich King is teaching there in a couple weeks.

First thing Monday morning I'll order a manual for it from Monarch.

More pictures later.

Nice looking machine. As far a 10EE's go that's a near new. :)

Any idea what type of drive system she has?
Looking forward to more pictures.

I hesitate to like this for fear my wife may see it and start asking questions I don't want to answer. "Oh that, I had it for years!" Has been my go to for a long time. She hasn't smothered me with a pillow in my sleep yet so I figure if it ain't broke......

Nice going! And an inch-metric machine besides. Look forward to more pictures plus details (drive type, original owner).

Thanks. I'll ask Monarch for any history they have on it. I'll post pictures of the control panel. I have not had a chance to open it up yet. That will be in a couple weeks in the class.

I wanted that 610 that was next to it but somebody else wanted it more. They were both nice machines.
It's a good thing I don't have space, otherwise I might have bit on it too. I've got more than enough on my plate already.

My wife is pretty tolerant. She does worry about finances. My rationalization is that these things hold their value pretty well. With a bit of sweat equity I ( more like my wife or son ) can get close to what I payed for it. The lathe will easily outlast me.

This guy is a bit big for me to seek into the garage. :)

I was sure I had a picture of the electrical spec plate, but I don't. It's setup for 480 volts. Looks like it's a 5hp DC motor. Not sure.

Only argument as works for me is "It keeps me out of pubs and brothels".

So far, She's been good with that..

Age, however, is gradually weakening the argument to where She'll soon just laugh at the possibility...

Thank you very much for the picture of the electronics. The 10EE history I have indicates Monarch went to the all solid state drive (eliminating the three thyratron tubes of the "module drive")in 1984. The 5 H.P. motor remained standard.

That does NOT look to me to be Monarch's work, nor that of a DoD rebuilder.

See if that black heat-sinked critter isn't a KBRG-240D or KBRG-255D 180 VDC KB-Penta DC Drive for starters.

If so, you can improve on that.

There's a 5 HP GE KinaMatic former modular in-work as we speak, PM thread planned on it 'shortly', progress shared with you by email in the meanwhile if you care to.

Its not often you see one that new. I am always interested in hearing the machines history. Monarch should be able to tell you who it was orig sold to. Where/how did you end up with it? Tell us those details in the meantime.

That doesn't look like a very professional wiring job. Based on Monarch's reputation for building top-notch stuff, I'd guess this one has been rewired since it left the factory. For example, the wiring on the transformers is not pro work. The fork terminals are the wrong size, the wires are routed in a haphazard way, and you can tell they used a cheap crimper - not a ratcheting type crimper like most professionals use. There's also the burnt stuff on the left-hand side of the enclosure, and the main power fuses don't match, suggesting at least one has been replaced. Based on all of that, I'd say some kind of major oh-shit moment occurred somewhere along the line, and was rectified by someone not well versed in aesthetically pleasing industrial control wiring techniques.

I'm not trying to knock your new machine - I wish mine was that nice. Just pointing the wiring out in case you run into some issues down the road. It may work like a champ, but I'd proceed with some suspicion.
