    Default Lubrication 43 EE

Thanks to all the great people here I believe I have the electrics figured out. Now its time to lube it up. Going to start with the mg and dc motor first. Can someone point me in the right direction. Thanks

Here's my response to this question, from a recent post:

Personally, I would hold off on the motor grease and run her. A lot of motors fail because they are OVER greased. The excess grease squeezes out of the bearing and if it gets in the wrong place can cause serious problems. Motor fires have even been known to result. Some plants remove the grease fittings and plug the holes to keep over-zealous maintenance men from doing more harm than good. Plus you don't know what's in those long grease tubes that you'll be forcing into the bearings. If you're not getting any noise out of the bearings, don't worry about it. If you're really concerned, pull the spindle motor and MG set, take the ends off, clean and grease the bearings with fresh grease. However, the potential for damaging wires with brittle insulation is there any time you mess with an old motor. As to grease, modern grease like Mobilith SHC 100, which is an electric motor grease, is just fine.

Thanks Cal, but I already greased the mg and the dc motor. The rear of the dc motor and outside side of the mg.I will probably just hope for the best there and keep an eye out for excess grease. What kind of lube goes in the other end of the mg? Also the dc motor gearbox with the pulley? I will probably flush these again after a short run.

I have no idea what you mean by "the other end of the mg". The same grease goes in the MG, exciter and DC motor. The problem there is that you're not putting new grease into the bearings, you're forcing God knows what from the grease tubes in ahead of the new grease.

Mobile DTE Heavy-Medium for the back-gear, gearbox and headstock center reservoir. And no, not just any ISO 68 oil is OK; don't use motor oil, don't use hydraulic oil.

I was talking about the left side of the motor generator looking at it from the front. There is a pipe plug there. That must be the grease tube for that side? Since greasing it might do more harm than good I will leave it alone. Thanks
