My first thought, exactly!

I guess the main question is, did the fire do any major damage to other parts? I bought a DP220 drill press that came out of a fire. The motor was no good, the front pulley had melted into the body of the press, bearings were toast, and springs had sprung. Granted, I only paid $10 for it, but I had to put a lot more back into it.

Fire damage to the big Monarch looks very minimal
looking at the couple shots. First things to show
heat damage would be paint, wires and anything made
of plastic. Not much plastic on that old girl. The
paint shows like it got warm and maybe wet. I'd say
the machine needs no more TLC than some bought from
a dealer. I had a shop that burned in 2000 and many
of the machines were salvaged. Two Monarchs survived
a CK and a 10EE. When the smoke cleared we chipped the
machines out of the ice and took them to a nearby warm
building and slathered everything with used hydraulic
oil. Than one by one they were cleaned and repaired as
needed. About 16 machines were put back into service and
the building had been totally destroyed by a pretty hot
fire. Having a place to set it and a way to move it could
be a concern. Machines like that still are capable of doing
real work and turning a profit. And when they sit idle they
cost nothing. I hope that does not end up sitting outside
awaiting the scrap man.

Looks like the same lathe here. Couple things that I noticed while comparing the 2 pics.

1. The square rod with the lathe starting handles on it is bent in the post-fire pics.
2. The tailstock handwheel is broken in the post-fire pics.

I considered going to look at the machine but after seeing those, and the fact that the machine is on an island and you need to take a ferry to see it, i'll pass.
