Repair for Hardinge Sjogren No 2A-D3 Speed Collet Chuck?

I have an old Hardinge Sjogren 2A-D3 chuck that came with my Monarch 10ee. The handwheel is very loose in the chuck so when you use it, the handwheel rattles and at times it will continue to spin when I power down the lathe, thus loosening the collet on the work.

I sent the chuck to Hardinge to see if they would repair it. Very long story short, Hardinge decided to send the chuck to ATS and then after 4 months returned the chuck to me with the very helpful message, Nose is shot can't repair.

Has anyone had this problem and if so, how did you fix it? I don't really want to buy a new one, and I'm a bit afraid of the used ones on Ebay as they look older than the one I have and I don't want the same problem 2x.

Any advice would be welcomed.

Maybe grind the thrust bearing washers some?

I can't recall if the Sjogren uses a felt seal, if it does you could change to harder/thicker against the wheel metal to quiet it down. If it doesn't have any maybe think of adding some?
