God bless my brother-in-law! I got to visit with him over the weekend when we travelled up north for an unspectacular family reunion. I mentioned my desire to get a smaller 3 jaw for the lathe and he said let's take a ride to his machine shop. He went right over to a rack and grabbed an 8" Bison chuck off of a rack and said I could have it since it was involved in a bad crash on one of his machines many years ago and he could not use it any more due to the damage to the exterior. He said that the chuck should be fine and I will have to get a D series back plate and de-burr the crunched areas. I tore it apart and it was very hard to open, but it turned out one of the pinions was binding due to a dent. A quick pass with a sanding drum, removed the high spot and it opens and closes smoothly. I will get a D1-5 ordered in the next week and hopefully it will be good to go. One item down off the wish list.

Better take advantage of it and go buy a lottery ticket...

Well, I don't think the lottery ticket will make it, but I took one of the "faceplates" (as he described it, to me it's an adapter) and machined it last night to accept the chuck. Cast iron is some messy stuff! I removed all of the damaged areas from the back side of the chuck and stoned it to make sure it was as flat as possible. I had to get some bolts and a tap today and I drilled and tapped the adapter. After cleaning it off, I slapped it on and put a ground .500 shaft in the jaws and dial indicated it. Once I got all three bolts very tight, I wound up with a total run-out of .0005 !!!! I am a firm believer of quitting while you are ahead, if I need it any closer I will machine a set of soft jaws as needed. I am still a bit puzzled how on God's green earth I managed not to screw that up, but I will just thank the man above for watching over an idiot.
