I recently posted another thread, and it was suggested that i try to find away to contribute to this community overall.

I am happy to help on anything IT related.

As simple as trouble with Microsoft Windows Updates, as complicated as Relational SQL Databases, anywhere in between and anywhere beyond.

If it looks, sounds, or smells like a computer i can surely help you out.

Areas of interest that strike me as you useful would be
JobBoss (i have been managing JobBoss daily, for years.)
Networking
Web Site Development and Management
Data Backup and Restoration
Standards Compliance in your IT environment
Security , physical as well as digital/cyber

Thank You,
Adam

I opened a porn site and my computer stopped working. Is this normal?

I meant to say this guy I know. Not of course.

That would actually be unusual. The porn sites typically want your computer to continue to work so you can continue viewing their ads and making them money.

The OP has established his IT bona fides, certainly by the standards of this forum...

May have been one of the free ones that gets you the stuff from the pay ones.

Yeah those operate by serving you ads, and tracking information about you. Information you may not want people finding out.

So, no it would not be normal for a porn site to arbitrarily damage a computer that is actively making them money. It would be quite counterproductive to their goals.

Use an ad blocker extension and the private browsing mode on your browser. You will have a much better time.

Can you link me to both your website, and this other website? I am thinking a simple iframe will do what you are asking, but i want to make sure before ei go into to much detail on how that works.

Do you have any specific information on the contacts you are trying to avoid, and where that information is available? That is to say, what questions are you being asked, and where exactly will they fin the answer to that question?

How do you force an excel file to open up in a maximized window from an IE link for all users?

How do you force an excel file to open up in a maximized window from an IE link for all users?

Excel likes to open in the last state it was in when closed/saved.

Depending on what version of windows/excel you are using this typically works.

Make sure the document is maximized when you save it.

If that doesn't work on it's own, Open any Excel document, maximize it. hold down the shift key, and click the X in the corner to close it. Now any excel file should open maximized.

There are several other ways to do this, but this is typically the first thing to try, because you don't have to get into modifying registry settings and whatnot.

Let me know how it goes.

I started a thread a while back but didn't get any clear answers to that question.

So here goes... I mentioned that I was getting a lot of spam email from senders with ending email addresses of [email protected] type of thing, where the xxyyy part is all over the place but the ending is always .stream

I've been using Facebook more often and craigslist adds and wondered if these type of spam emails might be coming from either of these two sources of use?

Otherwise where do these .stream spam emails originate for the most part?

What is the best way to network 3 other computers in the shop to work in the same folder on the "C" drive off the computer in my office?

For years now, we have been simply networking the computers through the windows networking setup wizard and it works.......most of the time. The problem is, (and it is typically the busiest time of day) at random times, one or both of the other computers in the shop cannot see my computer anymore, they simply won't connect, and I cannot connect to them. It screws up shipping, as they can't generate packing slips, it screws up getting programs out to the computer in the cnc room, and it screws up accounting as they cannot access files needed making out purchase orders and for sending out invoices.

The solution? We have to restart all four systems and it sucks.....big time.

They all connect wirelessly and there are no problems connecting to the internet, but they just cannot see each other.

I am all ears on any solution for this issue.

I had a local computer shop guy come in and he supposedly fixed it as best he could, charged me $280.00 for his time and left. Nothing changed (except my wallet getting lighter), as 2 days later, same problem. His response was it was his "service time" regardless of the outcome and it's not his fault.....he states I need a dedicated server and wanted to set me up with one to the tune of $1,500.00.

Since I already felt ripped off for the $280.00 I wasn't about to bend over and ask for more..........

In any event, it was recommend to me (by a "bar stool" computer guy) to hook up a hard drive to the wireless router and use it as a central drive. It can be password protected as well.

Is it really that simple?

.Stream is just another top level domain. A few years ago ICANN made the mistake of opening up the top level domains and now there is all kinds of crazy things. .Expert .GURU .PORN to name a few. That is only going to get more prevalent as all the good .COM names are taken. This was christmas morning to spammers because now there is an unlimited number of extremely cheap and disposable TLDs to use and abuse.

Not a huge deal though, spam is easy to block anymore. You can run spamassasin or spamhammer on your email server to block any known spam, and you can even manually blacklist the .Stream TLD outright. There are also several ways to block the bots that are sending these emails from even being allowed to access your site.

If you want to contact me privately with more details, feel free.

So the best option is doing a central server. Find an old computer you aren't using, install Ubuntu Linux server on it (free) set up the share, point the computers at it, and bob's your uncle.

That being said, they way you are doing is perfectly feasible, but you aren't doing it exactly correctly.
First off you want to set static ip addresses on all the computers. IP addresses change, and just like if you changed the address on your house every week, the mailman couldn't find you, when your IP address changes no computers can find you.

Once you set the static IPs use the "Map Drive" function of Windows rather than the "networking/computers on my network function". When you map the drive is a direct line to it that never changes. When you do it the other way you are depending on windows to search for and find it every time. As you have seen this rarely works.

In regard to the hard drive on the router method. It can be done, but i don't like it from a security perspective. Your router is connected to the internet, and often extremely insecure. You really don't want someone to break the minimal security on the router and have access to your files.

Contact me privately if you want to get more into detail. I know i laid a lot on your there, but it's easier than it sounds, and you are halfway there already.

I'm starting to think makezee could be helpful but I think some of you should lighten up and take a "let's see" attitude.

I have what are probably 2 simple IT issues. Just not to me.

1. I updated to Windows 10. Before that with a right-hand side click on my mouse could create an ikon of the website I wanted to keep on my opening page. Can't do that any more.
How do I do that now?

2. Same with inserting a SD card in the slot. Before Windows 10 doing that automatically opened it on my computer.
Why not now?

Thank you for the reply. We offer excel files to the world so we can't go to each user pc and change settings. I use Chrome without issue opening the same files, the problem is with IE, maybe other browsers. We are going to add a macro to the excel file to maximize on load.

This could be a great service you're offering to the group. Thanks for that :)
