Default Industry qualifications for self- employed?

Any wisdom out there regarding the value of a skills recognition course for the self taught and self employed?

It seems to me that a paper qualification can be good for gaining certain types of new customers; on the other hand, the survival and growth of such a business demonstrates that the owner has what it takes to do the job.

    Thoughts?

If you are designing things for your customer, an engineering degree. Making things to their design, completion of an apprenticeship or X number of years experience in doing it at a place that has a good reputation for doing similar work. Word of mouth recommendations from people changing jobs and taking you with them as a vendor is invaluable. Honest and integrity carry a lot of karma.
