Black & Decker Valve Grinder

Have an old Black & Decker valve grinder probably 1940's or 50's. the valve stem holding collet is missing(1/4 to 3/8).Also
needs belts the old round type. Any help as to a source would be appreciated

I don't know if this will help any, but we have a kit at work to make custom O rings. We have used this to make replacement belts for various older machines in the past. I don't know if you can get ahold of something or not, hope it helps.

Our old departed mechanic here in town had a Black and Decker valve grinder, it had what looked like a regular Jacobs drill chuck on it.

Round belts can be made up out of Urethane, we make them at work all the time, they are Orange. If you can find the material in right diameter, check with someone like IBT, Motion Industries or such.

Check with your friendly vacuum cleaner repair person,or try making your own from a large 'O' ring. Cut the 'O' ring in two and use a razor blade to make a square cut on each end.Glue the ends together with 'Super Glue',they last a long time!

O ring kits come with a little plastic fixture that aligns a standard razor blade so that your cuts are more likely to be square to each other. Perhaps this fixture is available seperately or you could probably whip up a simple alignment fixture easily enough. A V groove hinged plastic tubing cutter might work also. And for anyone that's never tried it and questions the use of Super Glue for this purpose (as George recommends), it works amazingly well. If done right, it is very difficult to pull the glued sections apart...come to think of it, I've never pulled hard enough to break one, but it wouldn't surpise me if it broke somewhere else first.

I have an old B&D also. One of the collets
was bad. I think I got one thru the snap-on dealer. Its been about 12 years ago but think thats where I got it.

The replacement collet is the one for my machine.It is available, albeit expensive
over 200.00 delivered ! It keeps another old machine from the scrap yard. Thanks so much
for the help! Richard
