Clausing 8520?
Hello all,
Been lurking in the south bend forum, newbie who just picked up a 9' lathe. I have a chance to grab a Clausing 8520 in good shape for under a grand, should I go for it?

It seems a bit small to go with a 9 foot lathe, but it is probably a good mill if you are willing to be limited to milling smallish parts.

Are you thinking Odd Couple here? It does seem to be a bit of a mismatch.
But Woodchip, if the Clausing is in good shape and you're happy with it, go for it.

I have a Johansson which is the mill before Clausing bought Johansson. I've kept it through the years as it is a nice mill to run small jobs on. Given your usual parts are small (9" lathe), it is likely a good mate for your shop.
Of course the price is dependent on its condition, additions (like a DRO), and tooling (however MT2 tooling is easy to find).
1000 dollars is well within the range of a basic machine in good working condition.
As the attached indicates, you can work large pieces depending on what you need to do to them.

I have a Clausing 8520, it is small but it has been great for the parts I make and fits in my small shop. Many parts are still available too from the Clausing service center in Goshen Indiana.

What are you thinking? You'll pay more than that for a mill-drill made out of stale Chinese food. Buy the Clausing...........great small mill.

I bought mine for $1100 , drove 16 hours to get it , and still think I got a great deal !
It's a very nice small mill - with big dials . Easy to move , takes up very little space .

I have one of these mills....For little work, they are fine. I bought mine because I had space limitations at the time....
