Default Control options on a Fanuc 31iA

I'm looking at an Okuma Millac 561V with a Fanuc 31iA control. The machine comes standard with AI contouring control (special) bell shaped acc/decel. What is the difference between that and the AI countoring control II ?

There is also a nanosmoothing option can anyone explain this option? The brochure doesn't go into much depth on the Fanuc control and the apps guys at the Okuma delership are more familiar with the OSP control than the Fanuc.

I plan to use this machine for making forge dies so it will spend some time roughing and some time doing 3d finishing.

Thanks in advance

• AI contour control I is designed mainly for part machining.
• AI contour control II is designed mainly for machining with
successive minute straight lines or with curve commands like
NURBS curves, such as in mold machining.

Nano Smoothing: When a desired sculptured surface is approximated using
miniature line segments, the nano smoothing function
generates a smooth curve inferred from the programmed
segments and performs the necessary interpolation.

Above is taken from a manual.

I believe with nano smoothing, the control plots points at sub micron level when machining curves.

I would definetly ask them to find out for you. It will not only help you, but they will learn in the process also. Especially, if they are starting to put Fanuc's on their controls. It won't be the last time they are asked that question.

What Hypertune says.

Nano Smoothing approximates smooth surfaces inferred from the small line segments gennerated from the CAM program. It ouputs position commands in nano meter resolution (one billionth of a meter). The net result is smoother surfaces, better finishes and more accurate geometry. Nano Smoothing - 2 applies to machines with rotary axes.

I would assume that you would from time to time have to machine sculpted surfaces on the dies you manufacture. So I would go with the option if that is the case.

Here is some info on the control and options - http://www.fanuc.co.jp/en/product/ca...A(E)_v05_s.pdf

Be aware that every builder configures the control differently. So what is listed as an option may well be standard.

Thanks guys

The okuma brochure is a little light in the Fanuc area.
