Default double disk grinding

I need to have some parts double disk ground to get some thin parts (knife blades about .160 thick) flat, parallel and finished nicely.

I dont know anything about the process other than it is supposed to be able to do what I want. So please educate me!

does the hardness of the material matter? I would like to grind after Heat Treat

what fixtures are used? Are they unique to each part?

what kind of finishes do they usually get outta the machines? is there a standard?

What else should I be asking?

Thanks in advance!
Les

Default Double Disc Grinding

Les, I'm a process manager for Anchor Abrasives Co, We custom manufacture Double disc grinding wheels, Centerless and Roll Wheels. We are located near Chicago.

What is the material? Stainless? What are the part tolerances? Surface
Finish required?

2 opposed discs simultaneously grinding the part to size. See

Yes. A hardened blade requires a more friable abrasive.

what fixtures are used? Are they unique to each part?

Depends on volume and part size. If the volume is small you could use a
reciprocating fixture that would move between the abrasives. If the volume
is large than a rotary fixture (carousel) would offer better production
rates.

what kind of finishes do they usually get outta the machines? is there a standard?

Depends on the grit size of the abrasive. An 80 grit wheel for instance will
get about a 15-20 micro finish on a hardned blade. Finishes can be reduced
to half that if necessary by changing grit size of the abrasive.

What else should I be asking?

We could recomend a good shop if you need one.

Awesome info Mike, thank you!

This is as good a place to ask as any I suppose. How do I educate myself on the micron finishes?

As a low tech grinder monkey, I am used to thinking in "grit" finishes... If I get one of these can I trust it as universal-ish?

I dont need to be dead nuts on but I like to know what I am talking about and I am willing to stay in a Holiday Inn Express if need be.

Thanks again!

As long as your total stock removal is greater than the warp in the part, you'll be able to grind it Flat and Parallel.
