Who has the newest South Bend?
There are a lot of beautiful refurbished South Bends owned by Forum members, but who has the newest, mint South bend out there?

I purchased this new 10k in 1986:
Unfortunately, I had to let it go when I moved several years ago.

what did you pay for it new in 1980? I talked with Leblond LTD, they told me sold bend 10 inch lathes stopped production in 2007, the 2007 lathe was made in austrailia. I am amazed there are not more 1980 yr lathes for sale! and the prices people want For 50 yr old lathes on Ebay is crazy!, probably 5 times what the lathe cost new 50 yrs ago.

My 50 year old lathe probably cost me more than what any previous owner paid for it, but I still think it was a good deal. There isn't much comparable to a 4 1/2' foot bed 9A out there, especially for $1000 for the basic machine. For $1000 I could have bought a Grizzly G0602 which looks like a nice machine, but it wouldn't meet my needs as well.
I really like my lathe, and hope to keep owning it and using it for at least 50 more years.

if i could find a 9A or 10 heavy for 1,000 dollars, it would be a great deal. many of the south bend lathes on ebay are twice that much!, and from the photos they look like crap, with little tooling.

Blob and Paula - nice machines. Look like they are well taken care of.
The 10" lathes from Australia were Model GS26LT and very expensive, about 18K. They appeared to be a heavily modified Heavy 10.
I'll start a different thread for Heavy 10s.

My 10K was made in 1988, per the SB factory.
Said to purchased new by the Blue Earth MN
school system. I got it through a dealer who took it
as a trade.
Well used but still very accurate.

I am very proud of mine so I will speak up...
Mine is a CL81887RB, 1986 version and it is a peach!
The newest-best-looking SB Hvy 10 I have EVER seen was in pictures. It was on a government surplus auction website about a year ago. As far as I can remember it was located at an Air Force Base in North Dakota.
The pictures of it showed it on a pallet and a tattered crate was surrounding it. It appeared to have a couple of tags on it that may have been factory original. In my opinion, it appeared to be a factory new lathe that was purchased or delivered to this location, unloaded, stored and never touched.
If anyone is interested I will dig in my computer because I was so impressed I believe I may have saved some of the info...
The only difference in mine and the one described is it was a light blue color and had a large South Bend decal on the left cabinet door (to the motor).

Around that time I think, we were contemplating purchasing a heavy ten like that
at work. I still have the original literature I think there. The cost was about
$16K at the time, for the toolroom model.

FWIW My 10L is serial number 22981. Purchased from a machinery dealer that took it out of a Delphi plant outside of Detroit.

I could be wrong but I'm thinking only the bed came from Korea. I would be interested to know what was the latest SB that was made entirely in the USA.

I think the mid 70's to early 80's. I think SB had complete machines made in Korea. There was a very limited number of 460 or so, of one that looked more like the Import lathes. I have only seen one on E-Bay. I heard it took a 5C collet.

In March of 1982, the first shippment of 10K lathes arrived from Korea. They were CRAP. SBL disposed of them and sent some people to Korea to train them and more qualified Koreans from their partners company were assigned to work on them. About a year later, the machines were much better.
SBL always supplied many of the parts(spindles, etc.)
Some castings came for Korea starting about 1980.
The 10K is the only lathe that came in complete from Korea(except of coarse the machines made by their partner DHIL)
A few years later some of the Heavy 10 unit assemblies also came from Korea.
In 1992, during the bankrupcy, SBL lost all its holdings in Korea, ending all ties. The Heavy 10 was about the only TRUE South Bend made after that.

Where does the this lathe fit in? It was from the late 1980's I believe.
