OT: The CNC section friday achievment
Hi all
Well I'm now in the record books for achieving something nobody else has
Finding a new way to crash a heidenhain TNC530i control in a way not even Heidenhain GB have ever heard about. and they even rang up asking for me to send screenshots and the machine logbook of the bug in action.
Its to do with using the touch probe cycles to set the active preset datum and I get a big nasty red error message and have to reboot the control to recover it.
Boris
<<wondering what next week has in store

Boris, you gotta stop beatin' on that probe with Mr Slammy. Its little head is just too tender, so it gets all confused and errors out. Any experienced setter oughta know a 4 oz ball pien is more than adequate for probe tweaking

WOW.
I've gotten my machine stuck a time or two, but nothing like that.
(Boris - are you using an HH probe or a Blum or Renishaw or ? My DMG came with manuals for all 3, and apparently canned probe routines for every probe ever made or yet to be made. Took a while to sort that out.)

You were just exploring areas that the factory "THOUGHT" they had covered.

I was going to try really hogging some aluminum plate...early Saturday morning. I had my highspeed toolpath all set up and loaded, nice new zirconium coated 3/4" aluminum cutting endmill ready. Almost 1" DOC with 30% stepover...slightly more aggressive than my usual routines with a 3/4" helimill cutting .250 deep full width, but, I had bumped the feedrate up to 150 ipm, thinking (on Friday) that I'll start with the feedrate override at about 50%, but I'm sure it'll handle it. By Saturday, I had forgotten that small detail . Start up the machine, it helixes in to depth then I hear the spindle motor go BWWAAaaaaaooowww -Pow!- snap goes the tool. Guess that's too much for 15 Haaspower And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why I order new (large) endmills in pairs

And that's probably a result of 15 Haaspower not really being 15 horsepower, ain't it?

OOoooo... That sounds mean, doesn't it.
Things that go "bump" in the night. Dang!

The spindle may poop out but the servos don't, at least not until the spindle not running time out has elapsed which is too late for the tool. BTDT so now my spindle overload is set at 120% and it backs of on the feed to prevent stalling the spindle.

You know, I was playing with that on our Mazak. Turns out usually the endmill breaks before you can get 100% spindle load out of it.

That's the way it should be. If there's a true 15HP on a mill that diameter, the motor shouldn't slow (resulting in way-high feed per tooth) before breaking.
