Replacing Heavy 10 cross feed nut
I have to replace the cross feed nut on my heavy 10. I have the nut already, that I bought from a gentleman here on this site. Any tips or advise on how to go about it before I start. I have never had the cross slide off before and not sure how to go about it. Any advise or tips that I should be aware of, or watch out for? Is there a how to write up already some place on the site?
Thank You
Keith

Remove the compound. Remove the gib and its screw from the right hand side of the cross slide. Crank the the cross slide to the rear until the cross feed screw no longer moves the cross slide to the rear. Then push the cross slide to the rear from the dove tails of the saddle.
I would then remove the cross slide screw; and then clean and lubricate it.
You may find the the cross slide screw is worn somewhat and that you cannot get the majority of the backlash removed by replacing only the cross feed nut.
When you re-assemble the cross slide do not tighten the cross feed nut retaining screw completely until you have the cross slide back on the dove tails and the cross feed screw working smoothly within the cross feed nut.
Which series heavy 10 do you have? Small dials or large dials?

Before installing the new nut, be sure the oil
hole on the top, actually communicates with the
interior of the acme thread region. If not then
do drill it out.

Two ways to go
1. Make a new nut from bar stock
2. Buy 1/2" x 10 TPI L/H acme all thread and nut or a tap
Both have good pricing

I belive it it what is called a small dial, for every mark on the dial the cross slide moves .001 and should cut .002 on the work.

After writing this, I seen a picture and now I think I have a large dial. What is the difference, can someone post a picture of both?

Cowboy;
Measure the diameter of the crossfeed dial. If it is a large dial it will be about 2 inches in diameter.

Keith, if the 10L has a taper attachment, follow these directions, as the screw removes
from the rear and must "slip out" of the key in the handle/gear assembly:

Got it done today
Well I got the cross feed nut changed this morning, not to bad of a job. Everything cleaned up and re-assembled. I went from .053 backlash to .006, I am very happy with this. I am sure that as the new nut wares in I will pick up a little more play, but still very good for me. I think I have a large dial.

The factory spec for the backlash is .003-.005, so you are real close.
The cross feed large dial diameter is 2-1/4 inchs.
