I Want to buy a 6 Jaw Chuck
Hello everyone.
I am looking for an affordable GOOD 6 or 8 inch 6 jaw chunk with a D1-4 back or plain back chuck.

I can't define affordable for you. In Greenwich , CT, an affordable car is anything with only 5 digits in the price :-)
Bison chucks are a good value and are good quality. My dad has the six jaw with 2-peice jaws. It wasn't cheap, but it was a lot cheaper than some of the alternatives. He has been very happy with his. His is the adjust-tru or set-tru or whatever their brand name is.
New prices on chucks are high, but you can find good used ones.
Try Joe at www.plazamachinery.com
He has quite a few 6-jaw chucks in stock at reasonable prices. He also has a 7" d1-4 backplate. I got a good hardinge at a great price from him a while back.

Steve is right on in what he says above- Bison is made in Poland, good quality, fairly expensive but the adjust tru is a nice chuck. Joe at Plaza can pair up a chuck and D1-4 plate for you and he is a good dealer. Doug at GrandTools is super to deal with, and Pratt is a very good British chuck. I have one and really like it. If you want less expensive but still good, contact Jeff Beck at tools4cheap.net- he has chucks for D1-4 for under $200 bucks.

One thing to consider is that two-peice jaws give you a lot of options, not the least of which is the option to use soft jaws. Soft jaws are machined in place, so that you can grip things that you otherwise might be able to, and you can get things damn concentric with the spindle.
Also, to change jaws, you just remove the screws and flip them around. You do not need to unscroll the entire chuck.

Steve,
I emailed Joe today, and he says he has nothing in the way of 6 jaw chucks. Am I missing something?
Thanks,
.. Gregg

780. Buck 6” 6 jaw adj. excellent, 3 of the jaws have a tiny mark on the face of the point. Plain back, $260, with set of outside

I'd seriously consider this P-B. I have a P-B Super-Precision 3-jaw and a top-jaw type 4-jaw independent, they are both made in England and are exceptional in quality.

Thanks Steve,
I mentioned in my note to him that ideally I would want a D1-3 mount, so maybe he took that as I would not want a plain back ... I'll try again.
