Help...what is this lathe accessory ?

Not sure i would call that an "accessory"....Looks to be a completer carriage with apron....
This is what moves along the lathe bed to provide one of the movement axis..(Z) and it is the foundation for the cross slide that gives the second axis (X)
Has a pinion gear to drive the carriage aliong the bed and a half nut for threading....

A picture of your lathe would tell more.
Cheers Ross

That's the part that makes tools move parallel to the lathe bed. Without it you have a wood lathe (if you add a T-rest).

I forgot to add that the part controlled by the hand wheel with a numbered collar is the part that makes tools move perpendicular to the lathe bed.

The whole thing is the carriage, the part with gears, half nuts and levers is the apron, and the top part that moves is the cross slide. The dial with gear is a follower for threading.

Basics of a lathe:

A bed
A headstock (and parts necessary to couple a motor to it)
A tailstock (with spindle and hand wheel)
A carriage with cross slide
A compound (Mounts the tool post and may be swiveled for angle cuts and threading)

Optional parts may include:
A faceplate, center, and driving dog for between centers work
Chucks, including 3, 4, and even 5 jaw
A collet holder and drawbar or a collet closer
A steady rest that clamps to the bed (used when working on long parts away from the chuck)
A follower rest that moves with the carriage to keep slender work from flexing away from the tool

There are others but these are the common ones and hopefully you got a bunch with the lathe. With machine tools it's all about the tooling.

Member since Sept 2011.......first post??????

Not joking then. Maybe just a slow learner? VERY slow..

Wait 'til he finds that carriage as-had only fits an inverted lathe, then.

We KNOW they are 'out there'. Inverted mills as well.

Proof is in many, many fotos on PM.

No fear with up or down inversions. At least the thread won't turn LEFT or RIGHT 'political'

...not until Gordon or Miguel arrive, anyway.
