1018 or 4140 for crossfeed?

Definitely avoid 1018, if for no other reason than machinability -- it's soft and gummy. I would use 1144 ("Stressproof") for the screw -- moderately hard in the annealed state, stable, and machines like a dream.

+1 for 1144SP. Besides being free-machining, it has good wear properties. I did a new crossfeed screw for my Logan, complete with integral feed gear, out of 1144.

skill?

Thanks guys I don't have the tooling (threading gears or threading dial) and mainly the skill to make the threads. So i'm looking at buying the precision acme threaded rod from McMaster. I wasn't sure if the heat-treat 4140 could be turned down.
Thanks all for the info Clay

PM Swells and see if he has any in stock. The Amce LH screw he provided me for my cross slide screw had a much better finish than I could get by turning the threads myself. Gary P. Hansen
