I'm trying to learn to single point thread. My lathe came with a thread dial in the pile of parts but there are no holes in the apron to mount it. Can I drill and tap a couple holes to mount it? This is my first lathe and I have a lot to learn just don't want to ruin anything.

yes- generally the upper hole has a screw, the lower hole has a simple, undersized pin. The latter is so you can swing the dial away from the leadscrew.

Before you start, you should make sure the dial is correct for your lathe. If your lathe has an 8 TPI leadscrew, the dial gear will have 32 teeth. If the leadscrew is 6 TPI, the gear will have 24 teeth. The gear should be wide enough to cross the slot in the leadscrew.
