when I pulled the bearing caps the first thing I noticed was the "F" stamped into the expander and the f scratched into the bearing was installed facing the rear of the lathe my question is should I put it back how I found it or should I rotate it to face forward as it should be my concern is that it has seated itself in the wrong postion any way thanks in advance

I'd look for any matching marks between spindle and bearings. If not a problem, try it the marked direction to not confuse any future work.
