I know this has been discussed, but after reading all I can find making a jig for a breaker bar I can not get the spindle to hold still.
Anyone have any new ideas

Thanks Jim

My advice? New backplates are what, 60 bux? Count your time, your frustration, and the chances of breaking an unobtanium back gear that will take much time to replace IF you find one.

Part the thing off just ahead of the register and be done with it. Leave about a blades worth of material between cut and the register. When you get close to spindle diameter - which you can look up, the thing will pop apart ever so slightly.
Takes maybe an hour? If you have a lantern post and a l/h parting tool holder, you don't even have to knock off the disk park of the backing plate.

I wish I had quit screwing around trying to remove the backplate that came on my lathe much sooner.
